The Origin of Xuan Kong Da Gua

" Former Heaven as Principal, Later Heaven as Application" is the description of Former Heaven and Later Heaven of Ba Gua.
Basically Xuan Kong feng shui can be divided into two factions, the Da Gua and Flying Star. The core theory of these two factions evolved from the different forms and shape of Former Heaven and Later Heaven of Ba Gua. Using the Eight original Gua as basic to cross intersect to form sixty-four Gua (Hexagram) combinations. Ultimately Xuan Kong Da Gua is formed. Hence, Xuan Kong Da Gua likewise describes the Former Heaven' s effect of Yin and Yang, male & female and the Golden Dragon.

Square-Round Chart

Square-Round Chart also known as "FU XI Sixty-Four Gua Square-Round Chart". The 'Round Chart' represents the Heaven/Sky and the 'Square Chart' represent the Earth, which is our planet Earth. Master Fu XI watched the sky through his naked eyes. Due to the water vapour in the atmosphere which causes refraction, our sky looks half sphere. The earth under our footstep is flat and the vast land with no boundary, seemed to project that earth is square. Hence, ancient Chinese' s belief that the sky is round and the earth is square. Late I-Ching scholars take Qian as Heaven/Sky, as Gold, as Round and Kun as Earth, as soil, as square to define the sky and earth.

The secret of Yin & Yang of the Former Heaven sixty-four Gua
In Former Heaven Ba Gua, left side is Yang and right side is Yin. After the cross intersection of Ba Gua, the Yin and Yang of sixty-four Gua still remain unchanged, as well as the fundamental of Ba Gua. Thirty-two Cheng Gua on the left side as Yang and 32 Cheng Gua on the right side as Yin. This does not affect the fundamental Left Yang and Right Yin. (Note: Yin or Yang of Cheng Gua is decided by the 1st Yao or the lower Yao).

The arrangement of the Former Heaven sixty-four Gua Round Chart shows
- the strong and weakness of sunlight in different seasons,
- long and short periods of sunshine.

During summer Xia Zhi day, sun is right on top of ( North ). Northern Hemisphere enjoys the longest sunshine that day, it is considered to be " most Yang day" of the year, therefore it is assigned as Qian Gua.

During winter Dong Zhi day where sun is right on top of (South), Northern Hemisphere enjoys the shortest sunshine that day. Therefore considered as most Yin day of the year, is assigned as Kun Gua

The Secret of Former Heaven Sixty-four Square Chart (also known as Earth Chart)

The Square Chart and Round Chart each represent different phenomenon and Yin Yang relationship. Pithy formula said "Round at outer as Yang, Square at Centre as Yin. Round rotates as sky, Square still as earth ".

"Yang at North and Yin at South" has caused many misunderstanding. Why North (Kan) extreme Yin has become Yang? Why South (Li) extreme Yang has become Yin? In actual fact, Yin and Yang mention here is not the Geographical North and South, but the position of the Square Chart only.

Lower part of Square Chart, or "North" form by Tai, Da Chu, Xu, Xiao Chu, Da Zhuang, Da You, Guai and Qian Gua. All their 1st and lowest Yao are Yang. Therefore they are all Yang. Among these, Da Zhuang and Xiao Chu are most Yang.

Upper part of Square Chart or "South" form by Kun, Bo, Bi, Guan, Yu, Jim, Cui and Pi Gua. All their 1st and lowest Yao are Yin. Therefore they are all Yin. Guan and Yu are most Yin of all. Another explanation based on Yin and Yang relationship between Round Chart and Square Chart. Heaven Chart or Round Chart, Qian at South as Yang and Earth Chart, or Square Chart. Da Zhuang at North as Yang. On the other hand, Heaven Chart or Round Chart , Kun at North as Yin and Earth Chart, or Square Chart, Guan At South as Yin.
